The question that many people have is what is existential psychotherapy. This type of therapy is based on the premise that a person’s inner conflict is the result of their existence. There are many causes of depression and, in certain instances, no apparent cause at all. Melancholy is something that most people feel at some point in their lives, but sometimes it morphs into something more severe. Depression can be caused by a number of different things. Usually depression happens when someone undergoes a major change or changes in their life. Death or loss, serious illness, major events and personal problems are all major normal reasons that someone would feel depressed.

Depression can often be found in those that have suffered some type of abuse in their life. People who have suffered physical, sexual or emotional abuse tend to suffer from depression later in life. Therapy often helps with this type of depression, but it is hard to heal all the way.

Eating lots of fruits and green, leafy vegetables will leave you feeling much more able to face the world than meals heavy in grease and heavy starches. While often times the last thing you want to do when feeling depressed is go for a run, it’s actually one of the first things you should do. Or take an aerobics class, or ride a bike. It seems that the majority of people are now aware of seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. Seasonal affective disorder is the light-related mood changes that take place when the seasons of fall and winter bring shorter daylight hours and less natural sun, causing some sensitive people to experience sadness and sluggish feelings that they would not normal feel during the longer and more sunlight-filled days of summer.

Depression is one of the main components of SAD and it is due to the body’s chemistry being affected by the low light conditions of the time of year. The science that surrounds light and how it affects the body chemistry has shown that there are links to how much light reaches the back of the eye’s retina and how that light triggers effects on the hypothalamus.

The hypothalamus is the part of the brain that regulates many important body functions.
